Botox®

Botulinum toxin is an active substance (a natural protein obtained from a bacterium called Clostridium Botulinum) that significantly reduces wrinkles without surgery. Thanks to its therapeutic effect, this protein has been used in medicine for many years under the name “Botox® treatment”.

Botox® treatment” acts on neuromuscular bonds. It temporarily interrupts the transmission of nerve impulses to the muscles and thus calms muscle movements, which significantly reduces wrinkles. It can thus treat glabellar wrinkles (“lion’s wrinkles”) and other expression lines. The smoothing effect takes place between 3 to 14 days after treatment and lasts between four to six months.

Consultation and treatment

Botulinum toxin is precisely injected into the muscle areas involved by using a fine needle. The injection and the preliminary explanatory interview usually take half an hour. Immediately afterwards, the patient can return to his or her normal activities. Treatment can be repeated as the effect wears off. However, injections should not be repeated more often than every 3 months.

Side effects and contraindications

Botulinum toxin has been used for medical purposes for more than 20 years worldwide. It has, therefore, proven its effectiveness and tolerance.

Possible adverse reactions may be related to the substance itself, or to the injection technique. Muscle weakening is one of the desired elements of anti-wrinkle treatment. But the effect of the substance can sometimes extend to areas that you do not want to treat and cause unwanted muscle weakness (e. g. eyelids). Other transient side effects were also observed in 1 to 10% of cases (headache, hematoma, redness or edema at the injection site, dizziness, nausea, etc.).
